The Roskamp Institute is a state approved basic science research facility operating in conjunction with a fully active memory disorder clinic (MDC). The laboratories of the Roskamp Institute encompass a broad range of scientific approaches to understanding the cause of and potential therapies for Alzheimer's disease; however most of the work is at the cell and molecular biology level. Researchers in the Roskamp Institute were among those who identified mutations in the ß-amyloid precursor protein gene which cause early onset Alzheimer's disease. Since then, the key role of the ß-amyloid peptide in AD pathogenesis has largely been accepted, and much of the research in the Roskamp Institute involves experimentation on the physiologic properties of this peptide in various laboratory systems. In particular the effects and mechanism of action of ß-amyloid on the cerebrovasculature are being pursued. Twenty-seven scientists currently work in the Institute which is funded by Robert and Diane Roskamp, NIH, the Veteran's Administration and the National Alzheimer's Association. The Institute is housed in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at the USF campus but also includes affiliated laboratories at the James A. Haley Veterans Administration Hospital. The juxtaposition of clinical and research components facilitates the efforts of the Institute, which are to identify compounds likely to be efficacious in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

MRX Biosciences, Inc.

MRX Biosciences, Inc. was incorporated in 1994 (Delaware) and became the first bioscience company devoted exclusively to the postponement of human aging. It has established a mouse breeding laboratory in Truro, Nova Scotia in association with the Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC) and is in the process of developing an incubator lab in Montreal for further research with Drosophila and nematodes. All of Dr Michael Rose's postponed aging fruit flies will be moved from UCI to this new location, as they are now the property of MRX. Its Scientific Advisory Board is chaired by Dr. Caleb Finch of USC. Its members include Dr. Thomas Johnson of the University of Colorado, Dr. Michael Rose of UCI, Dr. George Martin of the University of Washington, Dr. Judes Poirier of McGill University and Dr. Parvis Sabour, director of the Canadian Government's Animal Research Center in Ottawa. Another professor will be joining us shortly, also from McGill University. We will release that information as soon as contracts have been finalized.
