We have a large group of investigators here at the University of
Washington in Seattle who have been concerned with cellular,
molecular and genetic aspects of aging for several decades.
Major current enterprises include:

1) Mapping and positional cloning of autosomal
dominant genes involved in various forms of familial
Alzheimer's disease.

2) Use of cell culture models to investigate neurotoxicity
mediated by the beta amyloid precursor protein.

3) Synthesis of transgenic mice as potential models for
Alzheimer's disease.

4) Positional cloning of the autosomal dominant gene
responsible for a rare but important human progeroid
syndrome, the Werner syndrome.
